Happy Monday everybody

I was back in Canada this past weekend for a good friend’s wedding, and an early celebration of Canadian Thanksgiving; but I still managed to find time to watch a couple episodes of Amazon Prime’s new series Faceoff: Inside the NHL.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, I highly suggest checking it out. It’s got content for the casual fan, the diehard fan, and the person who’s never really watched hockey. A great production, pulling very much on my nostalgia of the old HBO 24/7 series.

My Favourite Role of the Week

Let’s get down to business. My favourite role of the week has to be Chief Operating Officer for the ECHL. I’d wager that most of us aren’t experienced enough for a position of this stature, but it’s so rare that an opportunity like this pops up, that I’d be remiss to not share it. Definitely check this one out, even if it’s just out of curiosity.

Advice of the Week

I’m keeping it simple for this week’s advice, but this is an important one - your work experience should always be near the top of your resume.

When I read a candidate’s resume and their work experience starts on the 2nd page, I cry inside. It truly pains me.

It doesn’t matter what the experience was, you need to be able to show that you’ve worked somewhere and it went well and you’re proud of it.

Putting a full page of your accomplishments in school before touching on the prior work experience or even part-time job you had, makes the recruiter or hiring manager wonder what happened at that job that you don’t want to include it early.

You can have an overview at the top of your resume. You can list your skills up there. You can lead with your education, especially if it’s a unique degree or a masters. But do not start your work experience on the 2nd page.
